The Discipline Committee 2005/2006

Q. Where can I find the Calendar entry about student misconduct and the Discipline Committee?
A. In the first section of the University Calendar ie The Calendar of Governance, Legislation and Rules 2005 By Laws, Chapter XV, pp119–120.
Q. Who are the members of the Discipline Committee?
A.

The current members of the Committee are;

The Chancellor
Vice-Chancellor
Vice-President of Academic Senate
Dean of Division of Humanities
Dean of Division of Law
Dean of Division of Environmental & Life Sciences
Dean of Division of Economic & Financial Studies
Chairperson, Student's Council

The Secretary to the Committee is Mr Stephen Mu Sung (9850 7342).

Q. What kind of matters are referred to the Committee?
A. In general matters of alleged student misconduct. For example, plagiarism, cheating in examinations, library offences eg defacing of library materials, providing misleading or false information to the University, misuse of University Computing facilities etc.
Q. How will I be notified about the Discipline Committee hearing?
A. You will receive a letter from the Registrar of the University setting out the time and place of the Meeting and the allegations about your misconduct. You can call Mr Stephen Mu Sung if you have any questions about the material in the letter.
Q. What happens at the Discipline Committee?
A. You should arrive at the designated room 5 to 10 minutes before the scheduled hearing. You may bring another member of the University as a support person. Please notify the name of this person to Mr Stephen Mu Sung (9850 7342) at least 24 hours before the meeting. The Secretary will ask you to come into the meeting. You will be introduced to the members of the committee. The University will present the allegations. You will be asked to provide your evidence and to answer questions from the Committee. The University may also invite the members of staff involved in your case to answer questions. You will be asked to wait outside while the Committee deliberates. You will be invited back into the meeting to be told the Committee's decision and the penalty (if any) to be imposed for the discipline breach.
Q. What kind of penalties can the Committee impose?
A. The Committee could
  • dismiss the allegation
  • find the allegation proven and impose a range of penalties. These penalties could include reprimands, placement on probation, fines, community service, failure in the unit, exclusion from the University for a period of time or permanent exclusion from the University.
Q. Can I appeal a decision of the Discipline Committee
A. Appeals may be made to the University Council within twenty eight days.
